India's franchise industry is booming. With over 4,600 active franchise brands and a market projected to cross $140 billion by 2028, the opportunity is real and growing. Every month, thousands of investors — doctors, engineers, retired executives, working professionals — put their savings into a franchise business.

Most of them are making a decision worth ₹20 lakh, ₹50 lakh, sometimes more than a crore. And most of them are making that decision based on a glossy brochure, a sales presentation designed to close a deal, and the word of someone who earns a commission when they sign.

That is the problem FranchiseLabs was built to solve.

"The franchise industry in India has no shortage of sellers. What it has always lacked is an independent voice — one that works for the investor, not the franchisor."

What we kept seeing

Before building FranchiseLabs, we spent years evaluating and investing in franchise businesses across India. We attended expos, read through franchise disclosure documents, spoke to franchisors, and — most valuably — spoke to existing franchisees who had been in the business for years.

What we found, again and again, was a gap. A significant, costly, sometimes devastating gap between what was promised and what was real.

Franchisors would project monthly revenues that assumed 100% capacity utilisation from day one. Royalty structures buried in the fine print would eat into margins that already looked thin. Location requirements would push investors into high-cost real estate that the business model could not support. And the so-called "support" from the franchisor would evaporate six months after the agreement was signed.

None of this was always intentional fraud. Often it was simply optimistic projections presented as certainty, and investors who lacked the tools to pressure-test the numbers before signing.

The hard truth: Most franchise investors in India do not calculate IRR before investing. Most do not benchmark the opportunity against comparable franchises in the same category. Most do not independently verify the revenue claims made by the franchisor. They trust. And trust, without data, is expensive.

What good franchise intelligence looks like

When a serious investor evaluates a listed equity, they have access to audited financials, analyst reports, historical performance data, peer comparisons, and independent research. The ecosystem exists because the market demands it.

When the same investor evaluates a franchise opportunity worth the same amount of money, they have almost none of that. They have a franchise brochure, a few Google reviews, and whatever they can piece together from talking to other franchisees — if they can find them and if those franchisees are willing to talk candidly.

FranchiseLabs is our attempt to close that gap. We research, analyse, and publish independent intelligence on franchise opportunities across India — the kind of analysis that a serious, experienced investor would do before writing a cheque.

Specifically, every analysis we publish includes:

Real investment numbers. Not ranges from a brochure — actual investment requirements including setup costs, working capital, deposits, and fees that franchisors often understate.

Revenue and margin analysis. What the business can realistically earn, based on comparable operating units, location economics, and category benchmarks — not the best-case scenario from a sales deck.

IRR and payback calculations. The metrics that matter for any investment decision. If the numbers do not support a reasonable return on invested capital, we say so clearly.

Risk ratings. Every franchise carries risks — brand risk, market saturation risk, franchisor support risk, exit risk. We assess each factor independently and give an overall risk rating with our reasoning.

Category benchmarks. A franchise does not exist in isolation. We compare every opportunity against the best and worst performers in its category, so you know whether you are looking at a good investment or just a familiar brand name.

What we are not

FranchiseLabs is not a franchise consultancy. We do not earn commissions from franchisors. We do not charge brands to be featured on our platform. We do not have a financial interest in whether you invest in any particular franchise or not.

That independence is the foundation of everything we publish. The moment we take money from a franchisor to feature their opportunity, our analysis becomes marketing. We are not interested in that model.

We are also not a directory. India has enough places to find a list of franchise opportunities. What it does not have is a place where a serious investor can go to find honest, data-driven analysis that tells them what an investment is actually worth — including when the answer is "not as much as the brochure suggests."

"We will tell you when a franchise opportunity is genuinely attractive. We will also tell you when it is not. Both are equally valuable to an investor making a serious decision."

Who this is for

FranchiseLabs is built for the serious franchise investor in India. The person who is putting real money into a franchise business and wants to make that decision on the basis of evidence, not promises.

You might be evaluating your first franchise and wondering how to separate the good opportunities from the overpriced ones. You might be an experienced investor looking to expand your portfolio and wanting independent benchmarks to pressure-test what you're seeing. You might be a professional or business owner who has been approached by a franchise sales team and wants a second opinion before signing.

Whoever you are — if you treat a franchise investment the way it deserves to be treated, as a serious financial decision that requires serious analysis — FranchiseLabs is for you.

What comes next
